ABOUT CANDID
CANDID are a team of four students from St. Aloysius taking part in the Jaye company program.
They embrace the values of sustainability andstewardship, and strive to be guardians of the Earth. ‘We believe that each one of us can make a difference, but together we can
make a change. Our aim is to inspire businesses to create sustainable alternatives for everyday products.’
The issue with plastic is that it is made to last decades, centuries, and sometimes even millennia without decomposing, but is all too often single use. About 17.6 billion pounds of plastic enter oceans each year. This is because only 9% of all plastic is ever recycled.
Plastic often accumulates in landfills. When rainwater fills the landfill, it absorbs the water-soluble compounds the plastic contains, some of which are toxic. When these toxic chemicals accumulate, they create Leachate that infiltrates into lakes, rivers and oceans threatening wildlife.
Plastic can float out into oceans and get caught in a Gyre, a large system of rotating currents where pollution accumulates. The plastic brakes down into micro plastics that marine life consume and pass up the food chain until they reach our dinner plates. About 2 million plastic bags are used worldwide every minute. The average person consumes about 70000 micro plastics per year. And about 1.5 billion phone cases are
thrown away each year. This is because the average useful life of a phone case is about 22 months.
